In a world obsessed with retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid, azelaic acid remains one of skincare's most underrated multitaskers. This naturally occurring acid treats acne, fades hyperpigmentation, and calms rosacea -- all while being gentle enough for sensitive and pregnant skin. If you have not tried it yet, you are missing out.

What is azelaic acid?

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid naturally produced by yeast that lives on the skin. In skincare, it is typically used in concentrations of 10% (over-the-counter) to 15-20% (prescription). It has a remarkably favorable safety profile and is one of the few prescription acne and rosacea treatments considered safe during pregnancy.

How it treats acne

Azelaic acid has antibacterial properties that target acne-causing bacteria. It helps normalize keratinization -- preventing the clogged pores that lead to breakouts. It reduces inflammation, making existing breakouts less red and swollen. Unlike benzoyl peroxide, it does not bleach fabrics, and unlike retinoids, it does not cause significant peeling or purging.

How it fades dark spots

Azelaic acid inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production. This makes it effective for treating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, and general uneven skin tone. It is particularly valuable for darker skin tones, which are more prone to PIH and more sensitive to harsh brightening treatments.

How it calms rosacea

Azelaic acid is one of the most commonly prescribed treatments for rosacea. It reduces the redness, bumps, and swelling associated with papulopustular rosacea. Its anti-inflammatory properties help calm the chronic low-grade inflammation that characterizes the condition.

How to use it

Apply a thin layer after cleansing and toning, but before moisturizer. It can be used morning and evening -- layer under sunscreen in the AM. It can be alternated with retinol (azelaic acid on some nights, retinol on others) for a comprehensive treatment approach. It pairs well with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid.

One thing to know: some formulations have a slightly gritty texture and can pill under other products if not absorbed properly. Apply to slightly damp skin, use a thin layer, and wait 1 to 2 minutes before applying the next step.
