When temperatures rise and humidity increases, your skin behaves differently -- and your skincare routine needs to adapt. Using the same heavy products in July that worked in January is a recipe for clogged pores, excess oil, and breakouts. Here is how to transition your routine for summer without sacrificing results.
Why your skin changes in summer
Heat increases blood flow to the skin, which ramps up sebum production. Humidity adds moisture to the environment, so your skin needs less help staying hydrated. Sweat mixes with sunscreen, makeup, and environmental pollutants, creating a pore-clogging cocktail. UV exposure is more intense, increasing the risk of hyperpigmentation and sun damage.
Swap your cleanser
If you use a cream cleanser in winter, switch to a gel or foaming cleanser for summer. Consider double cleansing in the evening to thoroughly remove sunscreen, sweat, and buildup. Look for cleansers with salicylic acid if you are prone to summer breakouts.
Lighten your moisturizer
Trade thick creams for lightweight gel moisturizers or water-based lotions. Gel moisturizers provide hydration without the heavy, occlusive feel that traps heat and oil. Look for hyaluronic acid and aloe vera that hydrate without adding weight.
Upgrade your sunscreen game
Apply a generous amount of broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning and reapply every 2 hours when outdoors. Water-resistant formulas are essential if you are swimming or sweating. Choose a dedicated face sunscreen with a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula.
Adjust your actives
Retinol increases photosensitivity, so some people prefer to reduce frequency in summer. If you continue using retinol, strict sunscreen adherence is non-negotiable. Vitamin C is ideal for summer -- it provides antioxidant protection against UV-generated free radicals. AHAs also increase photosensitivity, so use them at night and always follow with morning SPF.
Add antioxidants
Summer is when your skin faces the most oxidative stress from UV exposure, pollution, and heat. A vitamin C serum in the morning provides antioxidant protection that complements your sunscreen. Green tea extract, vitamin E, and niacinamide also offer antioxidant benefits.
Do not forget your body
Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, including ears, back of neck, feet, and hands. Exfoliate the body 1 to 2 times per week to prevent ingrown hairs and rough texture. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and use a hydrating facial mist for a midday refresh -- look for mists with hyaluronic acid or rose water, and avoid mists with alcohol.
